Photo of Ann Marie H   Darn - I missed the monthly meeting last week. That first week of the month thing seems to pass me by. See you next month. By the way - did anyone see on the OBH site about the national East coast meeting in NJ in May? Anyone thinking of going and making a weekend out of it?     -- Ann Marie H

Stephanie Your best bet would be to call Robbie at the doc's office yourself. Robbie is very helpful and knowledgeable. Good luck. Ann Marie    -- Ann Marie H

Photo of Ann Marie H   Thought you might all be interested in this - especially those of you that are still fighting with insurance companies. It was posted to the website today. Here is a message from Gary Visco that he wanted to be passed around. If you have any questions, please contact him. Hi, Ok, well I have been asked about Class Actions and yes, in fact today my office met with a firm that I handle litigation firm and decided to commence an investigation into Class Actions against a few of the carriers. Now, CIGNA so far covers the policy and with some degree of fighting they eventually approve, though it may take a big fight, or the help of your doctor or an attorney. BCBS has an exclusion that is almost Nationwide. The other carriers also are beginning to exclude the surgery which in many States is held valid at the State level. What does this mean. Well, if you have a NON-self funded plan, i/e your employer only pays the premiums it does NOT fund the plan and a carrier only administers it, then you can be part of the class action if your insurance carrier is excluding you and the exclusion is upheld and all your appeals are exhausted. If you can appeal you need to. If your now out of luck, you should email me. Please pass the word around. We are starting with BCBS, I imagine we will expand that quickly as UHC and AETNA are going to exclude the surgery, CIGNA so far has not but they we'll keep watching. We will announce the class action in the middle of august. Gary     -- Ann Marie H

Photo of LuAnn Masker   This note comes at a time that all of us who have had the surgery need to celebrate life! We have all been given the chance to make things in life right. This includes our health. I thank God for this everyday for the will and strength to undergo the surgery. We need to thank Dr. Peters and Robbie for their efforts, performance and trust and belief in us. If it wasn't for them.....who knows where we would be. Thank you for being there for all of us! To all the newest members...... Think positive, be strong and it will happen!     -- LuAnn Masker

This message is for Robbie. I talk to you quite often it seems but I wanted to post a note to show you how much that I appreciate all the intense work that you have put in on my behalf. You have spent countless hours not only battling people back and forth on the phone, making appts. for me and anything else that you had to. BUT and I mean that, it does not even come close to the appreciation that I feel for all the hours you spent with me just trying to ease my mind and always going those "10 extra miles" to make my mind at peace. You and Dr. Peters are such an awesome TEAM! I would never be where I am at right now if it weren't for both of you. My mindset and everything. Thank You does not seem to cover it but there just are not enough words. Thank You to you and Dr. Peters    -- Jennifer G

Michele To answer your question about BC/BS of NE PA. They say they cover the RNY only. Everything else is considered experimental. The employer chooses the policy of what they would like to have for their employees. Some have better or should I say different coverage. Kind of like the options one has on their car insurance. Do you want more or less coverage. Then the employee gets whatever their employer has picked out for them. You basically have to go through the process. You can call the ins. co and tell them your policy # and they should be able to at least tell you if it is a covered service when deemed medically necessary. As far as your co-morbities - I believe you need to have a BMI of 40 or more. Don't panic. Keep on reading. This website and others have some terrific valuable information. Take advantage of everything you can find out. It will help make your decisions easier. It will help you be a better informed patient which is easier for you and your doctor. Good luck - you will like Dr. Peters.     -- Ann Marie H

Can anyone tell me how Access Care II is, with approving these surgeries? It is Blue Cross Blue Shield of NE PA. I have my first appointment with Dr. Peter on June 3rd and am getting anxious about whether or not my ins. co. will approve it. I have Degenerative Disc Disease, arthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus and Reflux. I don't know about sleep apnea. Anyone that has any imput would be appreciated.     -- Michele Murphy

Photo of Ann Marie H   TS I'm fighting a pre-determination through BC of NE PA right now. I hope to find something out within the next few weeks. It's been a long haul, but I won't quit at this point. There's too much at risk here. They need to know that many other companies are paying for the DS and there is no reason why they can't. They have it listed in my benefits as a "investigational" treatment but that goes back to 1986 and no update has been done since. Also, I read from other people on the net that they were paying for this in 2001 but stopped. We've got to fight this. Everyone who wants this has to go fight this = go to the insurance company - go to your employer as they are the ones who tell BC what benefits they want.    -- Ann Marie H
